A Study on the Physical Activity and Nutrients Intake in Elderly Women by Resident Type and Age Groups

Abstract
This study was intended to investigate the properties of habitual physical activity, nutritional status, anthropometric indicators and environmental factors in elderly women by resident type and age groups. The survey was conducted on 426 elderly women over 60 years living in Tae-gu, Kyung-book area from July 19 to August 11, 1989 The result are summarized as follows: 1. Habitual physical activity by resident type indicated that daily energy expenditure of rural elderly and rural elderly women were 1800¡¾359.5kcal, 1503¡¾196.3kcal, respectively. Daily energy expenditure by age groups(60-69yr, 70-79yr, 80th and more age) showed also significant decrease of activity with aging(P<0.0001). 2. Dietary make of energy, protein, carbohydrate, Fe, thiamin, niacin, vitamin C in rural subjects was significantly higher than that in urban subjects. Dietary intake of 60-69yr. Group was the highest among three age groups. It seems that intake of all nutrients significantly decrease with aging. 3. Anthropometric indicators such as height, weight, skinfold thickness, arm circumference and BMI of rural subjects were lower than those of urban subjects. Anthropometric indicators except BMI showed significantly decreasing trend with aging. 4. Of the environmental factors, participation in social club and family type were significantly related to the physical activity in elderly women(P<0.0001, respectively). In family type, more family number, particularly spouse were significantly related to the daily energy expenditure of elderly women. Finally, daily physical activity such as housework had positive effect on nutrient intake of elderly women.
